BAND BIOGRAPHY
A Quick Look
History: The Carteret Community Sunshine Band is the Crystal Coast's premier volunteer concert band. Established in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable Organization, the Band’s start was financed by a substantial grant from the Sunshine Lady Foundation (hence, our name).
Our purposes are…
1. To improve our community by expanding its appreciation and enjoyment of fine concert band music;
2. To broaden the musical performance experiences of high school and home school students; and
3. To provide a vehicle for adults who wish to continue their musical participation throughout life.
Join Us: The Community Band consists of roughly 30 to 50 local musicians, ages 13 to 80, including students, teachers, scientists, medical and business professionals, lawyers, clergy, homemakers, and retired service members who enjoy performing concert band music. If you can read music and have an instrument, we would love to have you! We have varying levels of musicianship, so don’t hesitate to come give us a try, even if you haven’t played in a while.
Under the direction of Mike Self and Ritchel Lawson, the group rehearses weekly on Monday nights from September to May at Newport Middle School in Newport, NC. The Band performs concerts in December and May in support of numerous Carteret County civic organizations in a variety of settings and attracts an audience with diverse musical tastes and interests.
